O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. She made it to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled at her singing performances. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judge. But, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the bottom 3, and bottom 2. It was a shock to the judges and they advised to the audience to decide for Melissa as one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil's performance was so consistent that he never fell into the bottom 3. The judge Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner from her Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil received a phone call immediately from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
